Year 10 and 11 girls visited the offices of The Guardian in Kings Cross to find out about tech careers for women. The Guardian was celebrating Ada Lovelace Day – an international day to celebrate women in technology. Ada Lovelace was a 19th century mathematician. She developed computer programs for Charles Babbage’s proposed Analytical Engine.

I gained precious insight into the world of work, and developed an understanding about how women become successful in the areas sometimes considered to be for men.

They spent the day in a series of workshops showing how modern websites and mobile apps are designed and built. The highlight of the day was a tour of The Guardian’s software development floor, where our girls spent an hour talking to engineers and product designers about their jobs and their business.

There were also short talks from many of The Guardian’s leading women in technology that showed how they had come to work in the tech business from a wide range of backgrounds.

We certainly had a wonderful day, and every student walked away with a pair of Google Cardboard virtual reality goggles to use with their mobile phone.
